No wonder Asian elephants are endangered!

Our family visited the Oregon Zoo about a month or so ago. The elephants were one of the most memorable parts for Taeg'. Not really for the animals themselves but for their mountainous, um,..."POOP!" as Taeggy says.

Rose-Tu, one of the zoo's Asain elephants, recently gave birth to a male calf (as yet unnamed) after 22 months(!) of pregnancy. Rose-Tu was in labor for 30 hours and the calf weighed over 200lbs. Rose-Tu reacted violently toward her new calf and had to be restrained by her zoo keepers so she wouldn't stomp the calf to death.

Good news! Rose-Tu is responding positively to parenting classes, so mother and calf can now be in the same room together. The zoo keepers are still keeping a close eye on things:

"Their basic mission: teach Rose-Tu how to be a mom. When she shows signs of aggression toward her baby, they withhold treats and issue stern warnings. When she gently touches her baby, she gets her favorite treat: a yam."

What should they name Rose-Tu's calf? I vote for "Stompy" or "She Hate Me."
